Letters to Richard de Ruffey, 1752-1767.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 10 letters to Richard de Ruffey and one to de Ruffey's wife. Several letters discuss news in the world of natural history, including one which mentions that the eighth volume of Histoire Naturelle has been published as well as reports on the progress of Diderot's and D'Alembert's Encyclopedie and the censure of the Sorbonne against "le livre du l'Esprit." Another letter accompanies Jean-Baptiste Miroudot's Memoire sur le ray-grass, ou faux-siegle; others discuss the progress of societies for agricultural study in France and Daubenton's presentation of a paper on the plane-tree in Paris. One letter asks de Ruffey for help translating a letter in German Daubenton has received from Koch de Thoun, a botanist of whom he had asked for 50 species of small trees. Other letters contain routine social information, such as reports on the health of their friend Georges Buffon and that of his wife, a comment on the excellence of de Ruffey's white wine, and a gift of venison from Daubenton's wife to de Ruffey. Several of the letters mention Daubenton's financial distress.
